I first met Tony around 1979 when I was about 17. I expressed an interest in his daughter and he quietly approved though I knew he wasn't to be trifled with by upsetting his "Gailie". We got along well, why wouldn't we, we both went to the University of Combermere, Over the years our relationship grew stronger, not a big talker, neither am I, just the occasional conversation and acknowledgement /approval of what I was trying to do. When Gail and I decided to "tie the knot", at our wedding he said he always liked me, and Gail from the time she was born 😊. He made sure she didn't hang around the Lower Green Bus Stand where he knew she would attract attention! 😂 When his first grandson Jordan came along, he was worked hard as a passenger on Jordan's airplane, his white van with the windows up - in the hot sun! Then came Quincy and Mitchell. Mitch was dear to him bearing his name Winston. He also has his love for animals and a particular dog called Matlock. Tony couldn't bring himself to tell Mitch that the dog had passed so he delayed that news for some time to avoid negatively impacting Mitch's exams. 😪 Quincy picked up on his creativity and construction skills, and is in the final years of his architectural qualification at present. Tony has been there for us whether it be entertaining the kids or going to bat for us over an issue with our land in St Thomas. That was the first time I heard about "Lord Hoffman" and heard him get upset. With a few well placed words he was able to get the vendor to see reason, which was much appreciated as I hadn't "hardened up yet!" It was nice for us to give back in some small way as he visited us in England, pictures which you may get to see. He enjoyed that trip, it was unfortunate that he didn't come more often. In recent times I was fortunate to attend the Combermere School Old Scholars Association Reunion with him, and see his face light up as he and his contemporaries reminisced with the odd rum and coke 😊. I saw a few stars from 43,000 feet onboard my Boeing 787, enroute to London from Hong Kong last night - I'm sure Tony was one of them. He will be sorely missed by us, his school mates, friends and workmates. Up and On, Winston Malcolm Mallalieu "Tony" Tudor, Up and On.
Here's a song that I feel would convey his thoughts to us as we part company.
